Great American Smoke Out is an annual national event. The first recorded smoke out day was in Massachusetts in 1971. The idea caught on next in Minnesota and in November 1976, the California Chapter of the American Cancer Society encouraged almost a million people to quit tobacco use or support someone for the day. In 1977, the American Cancer Society took the event nationwide and is now held annually on the Third Thursday of every month.
The Collaborative partners each year with area businesses encouraging employees and patrons to quit tobacco use for the day or support someone that quits for the day. Participants can enter a drawing as someone who quit tobacco use for the day, as a former smoker or as someone who has never smoked. Quit Tobacco resources and information are available.
